Match Grades Explained
About Match Grades
Match Grades measure performance trends within Battle Court Jai-Alai, not a player's overall ability or value. Best used alongside match results and context.
Set Grade*
Measures a player's impact in a given set.
Attempts: How many times a player attempts to catch, control, and throw the ball.
Points: How many times a player scores a point for their team without the opponent touching the ball.
Miss: How many times a player's action results in a point for the opponent.
*Set Grades are found on match scoresheets
Match Grade
Built from Set Grades: Each set contributes to the player's final Match Grade.
Measures consistency: Not just one great play, but a player's sustained influence across the match.
Standardized scale: Match Grades use a 1–6 rating system measured in grade points, making performances easy to compare across players and matches.
Season Grade
A season-long view of a player's efficiency across the entire campaign.
Sustained, not streaky: Where a Match Grade captures a single night, the Season Grade reflects efficiency maintained over hundreds of attempts.
Position-Adjusted: To ensure a fair "Universal" rank, the formula uses unique benchmarks for Frontcourt, Backcourt, and Switchcourt roles.
The Highest Bar: Because consistency is harder to maintain over time, the Elite Season Grade band is the league's most prestigious and difficult threshold to achieve.
Career Measures
Introduced for Fall '26, shown on the career side of Battle Cards.
True Doubles Grade (TDG): A career measure of what a player individually brings to Doubles play, independent of partner, built from every recorded match in the archive. Switchcourters carry separate Frontcourt and Backcourt values.
Career Avg MG: A player's career Match Grade Average, kept separately for Singles and Doubles.
Projected TDG: The average of two partners' individual TDGs: an expectation for a pairing before they've played together.
